About The Downtown Newark Partnership

Are you the owner of a Downtown Newark business?

Our Strategy

The Downtown Newark Partnership participates in the Delaware Main Street Program, a division of the Delaware Economic Development Office, and adheres to the National Main Street Program approach to downtown revitalization -- that is, revitalization accomplished through working committees dealing with design, organization, promotion and economic restructuring issues. In addition, the Downtown Newark Partnership has supplemented the standard Main Street approach to better fit Downtown Newark's specific needs with working committee that deals with the challenge of parking in the downtown area. Each committee develops and implements an annual work plan, which is approved by the Partnership Board.

DNP, a business pact of local Newark business.

We are Newark, Delaware. We are Delaware’s college town, where new faces and historic places combine to provide our visitors with diverse experiences around every corner. We are rich in cultural offerings that enliven downtown through our Arts Alliance, Mid-Atlantic Ballet, Chapel Street Community Theater, and multiple music venues. We are an eclectic blend of businesses. Whether a designer jeweler who has served the community for over a century or a comic shop, located on Main Street or on Elkton Road, we offer something for everyone. We feed not only the mind but the body. In a place where hip meets historic, there are over 60 restaurants constantly providing visitors with new flavors to enjoy plus a unique food cooperative that has been serving the community for 35 years. We are the culture and the class. We are the future and the past. We are the best of both a college town and a hometown.

What is the DNP?

The Downtown Newark Partnership is a private/public partnership dedicated to the aesthetic, economic, cultural and social enhancement of downtown Newark. The Partnership has created a unique environment in which the City of Newark, businesses, residential communities, and the University of Delaware can work together toward a common goal: THE ONGOING ENHANCEMENT OF DOWNTOWN NEWARK with mutual benefits.

A policy board governs the Partnership. The Board provides direction to the Partnership's committees, and charts the course for downtown enhancement. The Committees bring together leaders from broad range of industries to ensure that downtown Newark remains an active spirited place to live and do business.

Under the leadership of the Board of directors, the Downtown Newark Partnership has been designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as a National Main Street Community since 2001.

The Board meets the second Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers, Municipal Building, 220 South Main Street. All Downtown Newark Partnership meetings are open to the public.
